Born Catherine Middleton, the eldest of three middle-class children, self-made entrepreneur and now Princess of Wales, a title last held by William’s late mother Diana, whose fame and charitable work allowed the world around him Members of the royal family were affected.

Kate, on the other hand, has kept a low profile, filling an increasingly busy calendar of royal events with a low-key, uncontroversial approach, while earning a reputation as a global fashion icon who regularly makes headlines.

Comparisons to Diana (the oval sapphire and diamond engagement ring Kate now wears) are inevitable, but commentators, aides and William herself say she won’t be trying to emulate her famous ex.

William himself spoke of these comparisons when he got engaged in 2010.

“No one was trying to fill my mother’s place,” he said. “It’s about building her own future, her own destiny, and Kate will do well.”

Her combination of charisma and hard work made the 40-year-old a hit, and he, along with William, is now seen by Britons as the modern face of a millennial institution that flourished for decades under the late Queen.

Although his father-in-law, King Charles, has seen a recent boost in ratings following his mother’s death, he hasn’t always enjoyed widespread support, raising questions about how the royals are now behaving.

As the wife of the future king, Kate is also the mother of another, her eldest son, Prince George, and her two siblings, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

difficult transition

Once ridiculed by some in royal circles for her middle-class upbringing, the background is now seen by some as an asset that makes it easier for Kate to connect with the public.

Joining Windsor was intimidating by her own admission, but her introduction to royal life was gradual.

The couple initially lived a low-key life on the North Wales island of Anglesey, where William worked as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot.

Kate is often seen pushing a shopping cart at a local supermarket. “It’s fine for us to be alone,” William said.

Some who have worked with William and Kate praised her down-to-earth approach to royal roles.

A friend of the couple, their former chief private secretary Jamie Loser-Pinkerton, told the Sunday Times: “She had an almost old-fashioned, queen mother’s approach to drama – she just didn’t. “

By contrast, William’s younger brother Harry and his wife Meghan have sparked controversy for parting ways with the royal family and, in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, accused the royal family of worrying about their son’s skin color and pushed her to to the brink of suicide.

From happy childhood to royal romance

Kate was born on January 9, 1982 in Burskill, West London. His father Michael was a pilot and his mother Carol was a flight attendant before they started a mail order party supply business.

When she was two years old, she lived with her family in Amman, Jordan for a few years before they returned to England, where they grew up in the small village of Buckbury.

She went to Marlborough College, a private school in the west of England, where she played a lot of sports.

“I had a very happy childhood,” she said. “It’s been fun – I’m lucky I come from a very strong family – my parents were very generous to us.”

In 2001, Kate began studying art history at St Andrews University on the east coast of Scotland, where she met William.

She posed in a sheer dress on the runway at the charity fashion show, with William sitting in the front row. The couple then shared a house with friends and started dating.

“We were first friends for over a year and then we blossomed. We spent more time together, we laughed a lot, we had fun, and we realized we had the same love center. Interests and We had a great time,” William said.

Their relationship wasn’t always easy, and they split briefly in 2007.

“I wasn’t very happy at the time, but it actually made me a stronger person,” Kate said.

Soon after their reconciliation, newspapers began to nickname her “Waiting for Katie,” a name she reportedly disliked because it implied she was waiting for the prince to reach out to her.

“I didn’t realize it was a match,” William said when announcing his engagement.

They tied the knot in April 2011 in a huge royal wedding watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world. On their wedding day, the Queen bestowed the newlyweds the titles Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

While comparisons to Diana abound, commentators say Kate does things her way. Ironically, if she’s looking for role models now, it could be Camilla, Charles’ second wife, and now the queen, whom Diana blames for the breakdown of their marriage.

Biographer and royal historian Robert Lacey said: “I would think that if she was studying anyone, it was actually Camilla, who are now two of the most important female figures in the royal family.”
