The next announcements from Canon will be a slew of lenses. We had reports of an announcement coming in late September, and that has obviously passed without anything being announced. We are very confident that a lot of new lenses will be announced between now and March 2024, but we’re still waiting for any solid dates.
We have put together a list of the lenses to expect between now and then. Our roadmap which is about 2.5 years old has been about as accurate as we could have hoped, and this is an update to that.
We do expect a few lens announcements in 2023.
RF-S Lenses
Canon RF-S 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM
This will be built off of the EF-M version, which was one of our favourite EF-M lenses.
Canon RF-S super telephoto zoom.
The focus of this lens will be its small size and lightweight. We don’t know the focal range for this lens.
Canon RF-S fast prime.
Could we get an RF-S version of the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM? We think a lot of people would be over the moon if that happened. The EF-M version was probably the best EF-M lens from a technical side.
RF Lenses
Canon TS-R 14mm f/4L // Canon TS-R 24mm f/3.5L
We expect the new autofocus tilt-shift lenses to be announced around the same time as the EOS R5 Mark I.
Our original roadmap has both the 14mm and 24mm focal lengths. We wouldn’t be surprised to see something around 50mm either.
Canon RF 24mm f/1.4L USM // Canon RF 35mm f/1.2 or f/1.4L USM
No comment.
Canon RF 200-500mm f/4L IS USM
We imagine that this lens will come once Canon has caught up on RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM production.
Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (Internal Zoom)
An internal zoom fast 70-200 f/2.8 has been mentioned a few times and it could make sense to announce such a lens alongside the EOS R1 in 2024. We think that this lens will be in addition to the lineup and not a v2 of the current RF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM.
Canon RF 10-24mm f/4L USM
An ultra-wide zoom is definitely on the docket, though it’s possible that the focal range we have been told about is incorrect.
There are obviously other lenses in Canon’s plans, but we have not been privy to the information. We have heard that another VR lens is in the pipeline as well as a few more Non-L zoom and prime lenses.
It does feel a bit quiet in the world of Canon when compared to the competitors, but we just have to enjoy being patient.
